About Paul Deans
paul deans sculpting"Growing up with my father's art instilled in me a passion for creating beautiful things and so, by the age of four, I knew that's what I wanted. However, that heritage was also daunting and it took me a long time to admit that this is how I want to work and live."

"My intention is that every work that I create will have the capacity to touch the soul."

Paul now lives and works his art in Christchurch, New Zealand. Having initially studied Industrial Design at Wellington Polytechnic's School of Design in 1972-3, he then worked at a variety of occupations, eventually, about 1990, returned to his original talent . He concentrated on developing his ability and passion for drawing and painting, as well as a unique, intuitive gift for extracting the hidden forms and beauty in wood.

Paul specialises in Sculpture and Portraits. He concentrates on woodsculpture by preference and also enjoys limestone, polystyrene, clay and bronze. Solo exhibitions include the New Zealand Embassy (Washington DC) The ArtHouse (Christchurch) and other New Zealand galleries. Paul's artworks feature in both private and corporate collections in New Zealand and overseas. Commissions include portraits in watercolour and oil as well as portrait busts in wood.

His sculpture has graced the front cover of the international ‘Woodcarving Magazine' with a feature article on his unique ability to sculpt portraits in wood. He is also a part time teacher of Woodsculpture, Portraiture and Life Drawing.

When offered the opportunity to join the sculpture department of "Lord of the Rings, Return of the King" Paul jumped at the opportunity to create feature figurative sculptures in polystyrene. It is a testimony to his skill and expertise that he alone was asked to design and create a series of limestone sculptures for film director Peter Jackson's private property - a task which began in May 2004 and was completed in November 2005.

It is Paul's hope that his sculpture begs the question: - "If that which is dead and lifeless but was once alive, can express such warmth and beauty, how much more could we who are living be able to express the spirit and grace that is within us?"

"Narratives"

The Arthouse
6-25 August 2002

Paul Deans considers his approach to sculpting in wood to be a collaborative process between himself, the materials and his intuition. In "Narratives" Deans has used the human form as a means of investing new energy and life in timber, and to create objects of great beauty.
